The Rasterbator is an application which creates rasterized versions of images. The rasterized images can be printed and assembled into enormous (or smaller, if you prefer) posters. Enter the online Rasterbation Gallery to see what the images look like.

The Rasterbator originated as a web application at homokaasu.org, but it has gained so much popularity that the web server occassionally cannot handle the load and a standalone version was in place.

The standalone version is the same as the web version, except that downloading images from the web and image cropping are not supported, and you have to set the output size numerically (number of pages wide/high) rather than using a fancy drag handle. The results are exactly the same.

The zip file includes the application, its source code and SharpDevelop project files. The source code is licensed under the GPL.

Requirements

The application requires .NET Framework 1.1.To print the posters, you need a pdf reader such as Adobe Reader. The application might also work with .NET Framework 1.0 (comes with Windows XP) and Mono (available for many platforms, such as Linux or Mac), but the compatibility has not been tested. If you manage to run it on Linux or Mac, please tell me!

The Rasterbator uses iTextSharp and SharpZipLib libraries. These are included in the file.

Instructions

Installation

No installation is needed. Just unzip the file contents and run the included Rasterbator.exe application. The application is wizard-like, which means it asks you questions and you click Continue button (or Back if you want to change what you previously answered). There are five screens with different options.

1. Select source image

In this phase you need to select the image you wish to rasterbate from your hard disk. Either enter the file name (with path, such as c:\images\snowman.jpg) in the box, or click Browse... to open the standard file dialog, which you can use to select the file. Note that the Continue button will be disabled if the file does not exist.

2. Select paper size

The rasterbated image will automatically be split onto several pages and in this screen you select the size of the paper you wish to use. Either use one of the predefined paper sizes (such as A4 or US Letter) and choose either portait or landscape printing (horizontal or vertical alignment of the paper), or use custom paper size. In the latter case, you need to input the paper width and height in millimeters.

3. Define output size

Using the paper size you selected, choose the size of the rasterbated poster you wish to use. You can define a specific amount of papers to both dimensions: width and height. The other dimension will be calculated automatically from the dimensions of the source image. The image size and paper consumption will be displayed on the page. Also, the preview image will show how the image will be distributed to different pages.

4. Set rasterbation options

In this screen you set up the preferred output options. The options are the following:

Draw cutout line around rasterbated area (default value: on)
This option wil draw a dim rectangle around the rasterbation graphic of each page. The border will make it considerably easier to cut away the empty margins. If you plan not to cut out the margins, you should uncheck this.
Dot size (default value: 10 mm)
Dot size defines the maximum size of the dots of the rasterbation. As a general rule, select small dot size for small output images and larger dot size for bigger output images. For a typical rasterbation job, good values are between 5 and 25 mm. Please note that dot size is the distance between centers of adjacent dots, as the dots may overlap.
Color mode (default value: black)
The color mode affects the color of the dots in the poster. Black and custom color mean one-colored dots: the brightness is conveyed by using smaller or bigger dots. Multi-color includes the original color from the source image to the rasterbated poster.

5. Save rasterbation as

This should be pretty easy. The default value for the output file is the file name and directory of the source file, except that the file suffix (such as .jpg) is replaced with .pdf. If a file of the similar name exists, the suggested output file name will be suffixed with such a number that there exists no file the name.

Rasterbate!

Then, click the Rasterbate! button. The program will produce the output image. If you want to use other programs while rasterbating, check the "Rasterbate on low priority" option. This will slow down the rasterbating, but it makes other programs more responsive.

When the rasterbation is completed, you have the option to automatically open the produced image file (requires that you have a pdf reader in your computer system).

The Rasterbator requires .NET Framework 1.1 - have you installed that? (I think if you use automatic windows updates, it should be installed, but I'm not sure about that.)

I have downloaded .NET Framework 1.1 and now the programm works. But if it has rasterbated my picture, I can not find the pdf-file. It is not in the selected folder. And the rasterbation is finished in 1 second, is that right?

hey everyone. i am just a stupid little girl, who is trying to find her rasterbatored image. could you explain to me (in an easy way) what to do next after rasterizing the image in order to find it finally and to open it in adobe... i read the instructions, but they don't mean anything to me. i don't get it...thanks for your help

The file is in the same folder as the image file, and has the same name, except the ending is .pdf .
So, if your image file was MyImage1.jpg then the output file is MyImage1.pfd .

I've installed the Framework 1,1 Packet, but I recieve already the error message, when I will start the program (WinXP Professional). At home it works (WinXP Home). And another problem: Since I've installed the Framework 1,1 - the system forces me to klick on my name on startup - why? How can I disable it without a deinstallation of the Framework 1,1? Hi there, great idea to create such a program. But I have some difficulties to start it. (YES, I have installed .NET ;-)) My problem: The Window of Rasterbator is too small, so that I see the Welcome-Screen but have no button to advance. The window also gives me no chance to resize. If somebody has (had) the same problem and can help me, please post it or write me an email.

Hey all, if you DO have the framework, and it's still Rasterbating in 1 second and you're not finding your .pdf file, make sure you've unzipped the ENTIRE package. I made that mistake at first. A quick read over the instructions told me no installation was necessary so in my mind that meant no additional files were needed. Well thats not true. So unzip the WHOLE package first, not just the .exe.

If you are having trouble with not being able to see the buttons on the program, use the excellent FAQ here: http://www.rasterbator.de.vu/ The link is at the top. If you cannot read German, don't worry, just look at the pictures to work out how many times to press tab (If you're not sure, it's above the cabs lock key, the one with two arrows with lines at the end) to get around. It's not the best solution, but it's a lot easier than trial and error with tab. Good Luck!

I have the latest .NET Framework installed, and I extracted everything from the archive, including the DLLs. However, rasterbation fails; it seems to only take a second. What is left is a corrupt PDF (actually zero bytes long), and the Rasterbator.exe process hangs.

I'm not surprised Frontpage messes something up... Use a regular text editor, for example http://editplus.com - remember to save the file as UTF-8.

I've got a problem similar to another user (patch-patrick@web.de). The PDF file exists in the source folder, but Adobe Aceobat Reader 6.0 can't open the file; says "There was an error opening this document. This file is already open or in use by another application". The Rasterbation only seemed to take a second to finish-is that normal with the stand alone app installed?

Wow... So much for me buying another few Wallscrolls. This program's allowed me to save a great deal of money; 25 cents a page at Kinko's lets me print a 5x8 rasturbation, and still pay less than a cheap wallscroll.

very good the program, the rapidity to generate the plotted one is excellent.
on the other hand I give some ideas you to improve it:
- to change angle of raster.
- to weld or to unify the dots in the case of generating a plane totally dark, of that form diminishes the amount of objects.
- all the steps in a window to be able to publish but fast in work.
- historial of the work.
- not to close the application and to show a preview.

There is a way to do the same process in Photoshop? I´m try to convet the images in dots but itnever works, and to make bigger the images without convert it to dots seems impossible.

I use Windows XP and have downloaded/extracted the .zip file to may hard drive, then installed the required .NET. I am now trying to run the .exe file but am promotped with an error- "The language data directory (C:\Program Files \Rasterbator\languages) seems to be missing. Please extract the language directory from the archive file."

I've looked in the actual .zip file for this, but cannot seem to find it. Any help is appreciated.

With the majority of images I'm feeding it, I get an error popup that says "Failed to load resources from resource file. Please check your setup.", and the rasterbator falls over and dies. I'm feeding it mostly jpg's, and have only had one actually work. Any ideas? Yes, I checked for .Net 1.1. It's installed.

The coders of the stand alone rasterbator are obviously not Mac or Linux or Unix coders. When someone with Mac, or Unix/Linux/Mac knowledge ports it, it will then be avalible.

Or, the rasterbator people can release the full unix sourcode plus flash code and then mac and linux people can use that (Well, the geeksavy ones)

Some ideas for future version of both standalone and online version: Option to center rasterbation in the middle of the papers. Ie, instead of not being able to use 1/2 a page due to none matching ratios of the pic and paper, there is blank space on both ends of the rasterbation, meaning a neat looking final product.

oh this is so perfect! i have this huge blank wall in my room i've been itching to hit with some old fashioned paint, but i can't because i'd never get my bond back.. it's been driving me nuts! this is exactly what i need to finally do something with that blank canvas that has been screaming for some art for so long!

wie kann ich denn z.b. die breite und die höhe in der anzahl der seiten die gebraucht werden anpassen? wie ich es bis jetzt gesehen habe wird das image immer so hoch wie breit (von der anzahl der z.b. din a 4 seiten, also z.b. 6x6 seiten oder so)
ich hätte aber z.b. gerne ein bild das nur 5 hoch ist aber 10 breit....komme hier irgendwie nicht klar:(
wäre super wenn mir jemand helfen könnte....

For all you people who have installed the .NET Framework and still getting the "The language data directory (C:\Program Files \Rasterbator\languages) seems to be missing. Please extract the language directory from the archive file." error. Make sure when you extract the file from winzip. Don't drag and drop it into the folder, instead select all files (action --> select all) and extract it to the folder u have created for rasterbator. Hope this helps for the people who are still getting the language error.

I tryed Rasterbator with Mono 1.1.8 and it worked. I use Mono for Windows. I selected the Mono Command Promt, selected the Rasterbator directory and typed "mono Rasterbator.exe". It may be similar for other platforms.

i'm so close with macosx.
1) install mono framework 1.1.8. you also need X11 installed, and probably the developer tools X11 stuff.
2) download rasterbator
3) start an X11 shell
4) setenv DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/X11R6/lib/:/Library/Frameworks/Mono.framework/Libraries/
5) mono Rasterbator.exe

Rasterbator itself craps out saying it can't find itextsharp.dll. mono itself should be looking in . for dlls so this should work. but the funny thing is that mono does not report that its looking for this dll. the application itself seems to be looking, and failing. in the dialog box that pops up, the path is missing it's leading / (it says Users/.../itextsharp.dll), but ktrace reveals that its trying to open /Users/.../itextsharp.dll. so its kind of a mystery that its not working.

mono does complain about not being able to find libgdi32.dll, which definitely does not exist anywhere. so that may be the problem. i have no idea where to find this dll, or even if it would help to have it.

oh well.

yeah great a free tool with less than 1 MB. Unfortunately I have to download this dotnet thing with >23 MB, hard work for an oldskool analogue Modem user. Anyway a Photoshop or Linux GNU Implementation would be great. I can´t tell you how I like this Program cause I´ll have to wait for more than 2 Hours till its loaded but if its half that good as written here I`ll be more than happy. A big thank for all the developers creating big Software without financial Interests.

Finally I´ve got it and its fantastic.
With a lot of work I could make a poster of my own with Photoshop but it would´nt be rasterbated it would be still a very big Print with a lot of Ink and big costs now I can print a real Poster with less Ink than than a standart one page Print. And the best of it all, a six sided File is smaller than the original File 9 MB-BMP -> 4,34 MB-PDF Thank you for this Program its uncomplicate its small and its the best downloaded File since a long long Time

I've tried everything suggested here and it still dosn't work. It won't even start. I get Ox494 and thread 0X264. Then it tries to launch a JIT debugger and gets an error code of 0x2(2). What the sneck is going on? cordbg.exe !a 0x494.

I am sure you can do this in photoshop or similar programs with a lot less messing about

.Net 1.1 and all pathech are installed.
I extracted to files to my E:\ partition using the path in the Zip file.

Does the program need to be installed on the C:\ Drive/partition?

Great program!! appreciate it. I thought this will blow the whole image into a big picture & cut it into pieces. But it does more than that. It convert into little dot and somehow look really nice.

An exception 'System.Security.Policy.PolicyException' has occured in .NET application.

However, no debuggers are registered that can debug this exception. Unable to JIT debug.

I'm getting this on my XP and on W2K, it is running on my NT4 but only producing 0 kB PDF files...
I have installed .NET 1.1 with German Language Pack and the 1.1 Hotfix (KB886903) on my XP box, the same on the W2K.

It seems that the ddefault security settings of .NET don't allow to run .NET applications on a remote (shared) drive. After copying the tool to a local drive it is working as expected (not on NT4).

The default .NET security settings don't allow execution of code located on *remote* shares. Though, it should work if your e:\ drive is a local disk, consider to try installing it on another drive.

Rasterbator seems to assume that directory separator is "\" while it can also be e.g. "/" on some *NIX systems. With help from slashdot user "lupus-slash" I managed to build and run rasterbator with MONO on debian GNU/Linux. The necessary changes are at

I need help with the image resolution. I suppose that I am starting off with pics that are too small. After the pic is rasterbated, the image just turns to dots. I cannot get a good resolution. What's the secret? Other than that it works great. Thank you to anyone who can help me!!

Regarding Timo Lindfors' diff above, I think there's a mistake. ApplicationDirectory=ApplicationDirectory.Replace("file:///","").Replace("%20", " "); should be ApplicationDirectory=ApplicationDirectory.Replace("file:///","/").Replace("%20", " "); otherwise there won't be a slash at the start of the path ("home/somebody" instead of "/home/somebody"). Other than that, I can confirm that this builds and runs on (at least) Debian Testing with the latest MONO. I might have a go at making the GUI optional if I could be bothered. All the buttons and windows forms and MS-Windows GUI (which for one reason or another looks wonky on Mono Winforms atm, though it works fine) is annoying :) Thanks for the cool software!

How about a Java / Swing based version?. There's lots of MacOS-X, Linux and Unix users out there, you know!!.

Making it with .net makes it windows-only, which sucks.

despite being .net, it's got a very low dependance on windows-only stuff. I've got a proof of concept no-windows port that works on MONO and when my real-life pressures give me time, I'll be tidying it up and submitting patches.

Awesome. Even better that you released it under GPL with the source code. This gives me a reason to learn C#. Like a poster did above with using rectangles instead, I'm trying out different vector graphics using the iText library method lineTo().

It would be neat to implement another step in the process giving you the choice to use the default circle shape, one of a few other preset shapes (rectangles, stars, moons, hearts, etc), import a vector graphic in some format, or draw your own. To compensate for the different area of a shape relative to the original filled circle, I could see some rough calculation of area modifying the Brightness.

Really loved your Rasterbator, reallly a cool utility.
I have been for years lookign for softwares which can do something on similar lines:

1. Creates huge tiled posters from any picture (without rasterizing) - tiled A4sheets of paper.
2. Print an A2/A1 sized PDF posters split across multiple A4 size papers.

It works great, under linux! Was a bit work, some diffs etc but it works, I'll change some more source tomorrow and I'll post the changes back. (File filters don't work correctly in a case sensitive setting) and it doesn't open the file yet but that would be easy to fix doesn't it

I was using the diff from Timo Lindfors with the modification ("file:///","/").

The pic is split into several pages, so you have to print out everything and stick it to the wall. So the dots become the pic again.

I keep getting the message "The Language directory (C:\Program Files\Rasterbator\languages) seems to be missing. Please extract the directory from the archive file.

There are many language .xml files in the zip, but I don't see a 'languages' directory. DO I need to restructure the directory to make it work?

BTW, it wasn't self extracting, it was just a zip file. maybe I downloaded the wrong thing?

Also the original image I want to rasterbate is a pdf, do I have to convert that to an image file before I can use the program?

Printing without margins?

Is it possible to get a PDF without margins? Borderless printing is easy with many modern printers, it seems a wastefull task to cut every page by hand when you have a printer capable of printing from edge to edge?

Guess I am a late user by the dates above. Just downloaded and this pgm is way too cool. Did my girlfriend and she thought she was on a billboard. Only problems I have are as already noted and that is wish I could print to the edge to avoid tedious cutting and then trying to match it up. Like a giant puzzle. Works great on Mono with the changes explained in earlier posts. Please note that instead of using "\\" or "/" in the application you should use System.IO.Path.DirectorySeparatorChar which will use the appropriate char for the operating system and keep everything cross-platform.

Hy, I managed to build and run Rasterbator on a Mac, using mono 1.2.5 available at http://www.mono-project.com/Mono:OSX. This page (http://screamz.madoka.be/wiki/index.php/Rasterbator_with_mono) links to a patch that makes Rasterbator compatible to Linux. It works for Mac, too! After installing mono, you have to
1. Open an X11 window
2. cd to the "source" directory in the Rasterbator directory
3. download this patch: http://screamz.madoka.be/Rasterbator.buildfix1.diff
4. type "patch -i Rasterbator.buildfix1.diff"
5. "make"
6. "cd ..; mono Rasterbator.exe"

That's it! Enjoy,
